경찰 폭력에 의해 사망한 조지 플로이드 추모와 미국 사회에 만연한 인종 차별 규탄 성명서

우리는 경찰의 폭력에 의해 사망한 조지 플로이드를 추모하며, 미국 사회에 만연한 인종차별을 규탄한다.

지난 5월 25일 미네소타 주 미니애폴리스 시에서 벌어진 플로이드씨 사망사건은 경찰의 폭력성이 직접적인 원인이다. 그러나 이 사건의 바탕에는 유색인종을 차별해온 미국사회의 구조적인 문제가 있다.

1960년대 흑인인권운동을 통해 한걸음씩 나아가던 미국의 인권상황은, 트럼프 행정부가 들어서면서 한 번에 무너져내렸다. 트럼프가 공개적으로 내뱉는 인종차별 발언은 코로나 바이러스처럼 미국사회에 퍼져나갔고, 말은 인종차별 행동으로 이어졌으며, 구조화되기 시작했다.

그러나 트럼프는 미국의 민낯을 내보인 장본인이었을 뿐이다. 이번 사건을 통해 우리는 미국사회 바닥에 만연한 인종차별이 그동안 그저 포장되어 잘 보이지 않게 만들어놓은 것일 뿐임을 확인하였다.

"I Can't Breathe..."

이는 이제 플로이드씨만의 절규가 아니다. 숨 막힐 지경에 이른 미국사회를 향한 미국민들의 ‘저항의 구호’가 됐다. 인종차별과 사회 경제적 불평등, 코로나19 사태 속에 여실히 드러난 의료보건 체계의 마비, 국가재난에 대한 무능한 대응과 사각지대화를 체감하면서 미국민들의 좌절과 분노는 깊어만 가고 있다. 붕괴된 정의를 살리지 않는 한 평화는 없다. 그래서 우리는 외친다.

“No Justice, No Peace”

소수계 이민자인 미주 한인들도 미국사회의 인종차별로부터 자유롭지 못하다. 우리가 다른 소수계 커뮤니티와 연대하여 불평등에 맞서 싸울 때 이 사회가 한 걸음 더 나아갈 것이고, 우리의 자녀들이 숨 쉴 수 있는 사회가 될 것이다. 우리는 반 인종차별 BLM 운동에 동참하여 힘을 더하고자 한다.

미국 내에서 매년 1천 명이 경찰에 의해 죽임을 당하고 있고, ‘세계경찰’을 자처하는 미국의 군사력에 의해 세계도처에서 전쟁이 끊이지 않는다. 그래서 시위대는 “경찰 예산삭감, 군대 예산삭감(Defund the Police, Defund the Military)”을 주장한다. 그렇다. 미국민의 세금인 경찰예산, 군대예산을 삭감하여, 빈부격차 해소, 의료, 복지, 교육, 환경, 평화, 혐오와 차별 방지에 쓰여진다면 이 역시 정의를 살리는 일이 아닌가!

우리는 선언한다. 공권력을 등에 업은 폭력에 맞서, 모든 차별과 혐오에 맞서, 미국 사회를 바꾸기 위한 정의의 연대에 함께 할 것이다.

Denouncing the Police Murder of George Floyd and Systemic Racism in the United States

We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter protests around the world to denounce the police murder of George Floyd and systemic racism in the United States.

Police violence was the direct cause of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 25th, and it is rooted in a system that has consistently oppressed and silenced Blacks and other people of color.

The human rights situation in the United States, which took a leap forward due to the Black-led civil rights and liberation movements of the 1960s, has taken a nosedive since the inauguration of Donald Trump. Like the Coronavirus, Trump’s racist remarks have contaminated US society. They have instigated racist violence and have become institutionalized. The reality is, however, that Trump has only revealed the true face of American society. The current situation is finally unearthing America’s well-concealed but deeply-rooted flaws—systemic racism, poverty and militarism.

I Can't Breathe...

This is no longer just the painful plea of George Floyd. It has become the slogan of resistance of people around the world who have been strangled to the point of suffocation. Witnessing racism, economic inequality, the paralysis of the healthcare system as revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the government’s incompetent response to the national crisis have fueled the people with deep frustration and outrage. As long as justice is not restored, there can be no peace. That is why we join the protests to say:

No Justice, No Peace

As racial minority immigrants, Korean Americans, too, are not free from systemic racism. Only by joining in solidarity with other communities to fight against injustice can we create a society where our children can breathe freely. We stand with the Black Lives Matter protests and join in the fight against systemic racism.

More than 1000 people die every year at the hands of the police in this country, and the world is mired in endless wars due to the military might of the US, which proclaims itself the “world’s police.” That is why protesters are calling for defunding the police and the military. Reallocating our tax dollars to cut the police and military budgets and invest in healthcare, social services, education, environment, peace, alleviating wealth inequality and preventing bigotry and discrimination is an important act of restoring justice.

We rise in solidarity with all who want an end to systemic racism and police violence as well as poverty and inequality.
