Her silk pajamas fluttered behind her like a white banner as she sprinted towards the darkest area she could find, straight ahead. Behind her lay the hotel spilling its yellow light into the storm while directly before her stood the tall cliff whose roots bathed in the Pacific Ocean.
Un-hee screamed as she glanced back and saw a dark figure set against the golden brilliance of the hotel, running after her. She turned towards the ocean again and screamed a second time, though she could still hear no sound leaving her lips, only the fury of the storm. She tried to look ahead but the rain, sweeping in from the sea, stung her eyelids shut. When lightning struck, the trees ahead of her looked like platinum pillars with arms and fingers of silver, and when night closed in again, blackness filled her sight and she sprinted blind.
Suddenly, a railing appeared before her and she knew she was trapped. In front of her was the cliff edge that dropped all the way to the water while behind, the worst enemy she had ever known approached. She could think only of escaping him at all costs so she scrambled over the wooden railing where the sound of furious waves pounding rocky shores rose in chorus and filled her ears. She saw the black figure advancing towards her, each step slow and deliberate.
"Get away from me!" she screamed into the angry wind.
The figure stopped.
Several moments passed and then a voice rasped out of the darkness, "I’m only here to help you." As he replied, Ju-han took two more steps closer to the railing.
"If you want to help me then leave! You’re the one forcing me over this cliff," Un-hee shouted back. Though she gripped the railing with all her might, the wood was slimy with rain and her hands could scarcely keep her from falling.
"I love you, Un-hee. You are my bride, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I promise I never will again." Ju-han reached out his hand towards Un-hee.
"I will never be your bride!"
At that moment, two streaks of lightning slashed from the sky and set silver daylight about them for an instant. Un-hee’s eyes, wild with fear, saw a flash of Ju-han lunging towards her with both hands groping for her throat.
