Commendation to Minjok Tongshin on her 15th Anniversary
Dr. Roh  Kil-nam, founder of the Minjok Tongshin, Staff and friends!

We gathered here today to celebrate Minjok Tongshin’s 15th anniversary.
Since her inception, it has strived to enhance much needed healing and reconciliation of Koreans, north, south and overseas. Koreans have suffered immensely by the partition of the country, three years of brutal war, and never ending state of war under the armistice of July 27, 1953.

Due to this military stand-off, North Korea has been unduly demonized by the machines of the US and South Korean propaganda so long. In such situation, from its beginning Minjok Tongshin has strived to bring rather accurate pictures of North Korea to the biased Koreans of southern part of our homeland and overseas.

In order to help all of us free from the distorted information of the true reality of North Korea, Dr, Roh through the pages of Minjok Tongshin has done great services of unbiased reporting. For such historical tasks he has devoted himself entirely without having adequate remuneration. So, much appreciation must be given to his spouse and children, who have supported his work so many years. I would like to bring special commendation to Dr. Roh, his family and all supporters for their unswerving commitment to establish a just and unbiased journalism for Korean reunification in the principles of self-determination, peace and grand unity of Koreans.

May the work of Minjok Tongshin continue to bring healing and reconciliation within the hearts of many Koreans, among and between them by reporting the true reality of North Korea as they are and the root cause of the never-ending state of war in Korean peninsula.

Thanks you!

Kil Sasng Yoon, President
The Korean American National Coordinating Council, Inc.

ANSWER Coalition
Act Now to Stop War and End Racism

November 8, 2014
ANSWER Coalition Statement of Acceptance of Peace and Social Justice Award
on the 15th Anniversary Celebration of Minjok-Tongshin

On behalf of the ANSWER Coalition we are truly honored by this moment. We wish to sincerely thank everyone at Minjok-Tongshin, and especially Dr. Ken Kilman Roh and all of you from the One Korea Movement for this great honor.
For so many years Minjok-Tongshin has been a resource for information, analysis and truth about the hopes and aspirations of people of Korea and people all around the world, who embrace the concepts of independence, justice, reunification, and solidarity.
We join with you in the movement to overcome the tragic division of the Korean peninsula. We wholeheartedly join with you in the movement to establish a path for peaceful reunification.
Friends, we know sadly that 14 years after the June 15 summit, the North-South Joint Declaration in the year 2000, that the situation in Korea today remains frozen, that division persists, that acrimony has intensified, and the threat of war remains as great as at any time.
Just recently, the long-term belligerence of the United States and its allies in Europe and Japan has once again escalated, this time by the United States and its allies in the European Union, spreading lies and falsehoods about so-called human rights violations in North Korea, with the outrageous goal of referring North Korea to the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands.
In fact, and once again, we must respond clearly and forcefully to this belligerence with the truth, that this hostile action by the United States is yet another attempt to spread lies in order to tarnish the image of the DPRK. Their goal remains the same: to bring down the people’s government of North Korea and destroy its social system at any cost
We have to point out that it is blatant arrogance and hypocrisy for the United States, which has committed countless war crimes in violation of the UN Charter and International Law – from Iraq, to Afghanistan, and so many other places, to be pursuing this project.
Due its own criminal history of flagrant violations of human rights of people here at home and around the world, the United States has forfeited its credibility and qualifications to comment on the human rights issues of other countries. This includes spying on its own people through wire-tapping and surveillance, killing innocent people with drones and other weapons of mass destruction, supporting Israeli atrocities in Gaza by Israel, extreme racism and discrimination inside its own borders, the use of extreme violence of the police against peaceful protesters in Ferguson Missouri and elsewhere, the maltreatment of prisoners, widespread gun-related crimes, violence against women, and so on.
All of us here know that the Korean War, that began on June 25, 1950, more than half a century ago, has continued until this day. The armistice agreement signed on July 27, 1953, has never been replaced by the peace treaty, and so the war continues, in a very real sense, because the U.S. continues to threaten North Korea, engages in war exercises that simulate the destruction of North Korea, imposes draconian economic sanctions that are designed to destabilize and weaken the DPRK, and continues a non-stop propaganda campaign of aggression built on outrageous lies and falsehoods.
Wherever we go, we in ANSWER explain that the problem of division on the Korean peninsula does not, in its roots, emanate from Korea itself, but rather it is the consequence of the policies of the government in Washington DC –many thousands of miles away from Korea. The problem, we say, is not in Pyong Yang or Seoel, but rather in Washington DC, not Korea.
By accepting this award, the ANSWER Coalition, as one sector in the U.S. population, has been, and remains today, dedicated to changing U.S. policy. In recognizing the historical validity of the desire of the Korean people for peaceful reunification, all of us must embrace our responsibility,  and say loudly and clearly to the U.S. government, that the Korean War must finally come to an end, that the threats and sanctions must stop, and attempts to isolate and demonize the DPRK must end.
The basic conditions of a peaceful reunification -- the lifting of economic sanctions, stopping  the hostilities, and the signing of a peace treaty -- if these are enacted, a peaceful reunification can and will occur.
We in ANSWER thank you for this honor which we humbly and proudly accept. Let’s all move forward together to intensify our struggle with a nationwide campaign to educate and mobilize the people of the U.S. to end the war against Korea once and for all.
Solidarity with the Korean people!
Korea Is One!
U.S. Troops Out of Korea!
Thank you.
Preston Wood
National Organizer

On behalf of the International action center I congratulate our friend Dr Ken Kilnam Roh and all those who have contributed to Minjok Tongshin over these past 15 years. The U.S. imposed a division of the Korean land and population and in it’s propaganda, tries to create a difference between the two halves.  But for the last fifteen years because of the development of Minjok Tongshin there has been an unintimidated voice that brings out the truth about all of Korea, including a strong defense of the people of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea – North Korea.

When the United States drew the line along the 38th parallel they hoped to claim the south as their own and isolate the north, weaken it, and reconquer it.  The division separated tens of thousands of sisters and brothers, and parents from children. To try to realize their dream of conquering all of Asia the U.S. military carried out a savage war against the DPRK killing many millions, and destroying most cities. At the same time they attacked the people's movement for self-determination in the south, which at that time was enormous and wanted - as did the north - self-determination, economic justice, reunification and independence for Korea. The U.S. military leadership organized and orchestrated massacres of unarmed peasants at No Gunh Ri and hundreds of other villages, and took political prisoners out of jail and carried out mass executions. But with all that brutality the U.S. has never been able to break the will of Korea.
Since the war ten consecutive U.S. presidents have occupied the south with U.S. troops and weapons, imposed cruel sanctions to strangle the economy of the north, and repeatedly threatened war against the DPRK that would be disastrous for the entire region. Administrations that had a liberal reputation too have been just as much a part of the oppression of Korea. It was Jimmy Carter’s liberal White House that gave a nod to the repression of the Kwangju Uprising and the supposedly liberal Clinton administration was preparing for a devastating all-out war against North Korea in 1994. They were in the war room planning, according to Dr Bruce Cummings, and it was interrupted by the news that an agreement had been reached with the DPRK over the question of nuclear development and they backed off on the plans. Of course they never lived up to their end of the agreement with the DPRK and the aggression has continued.
The pentagon constantly updates plans for a war against the DPRK, which are occasionally leaked to the press. They always include devastating attacks from sea, land and air, ground invasion and the possible use of nuclear weapons. And the trade sanctions against the DPRK are as devastating as an actual war. The DPRK has had to use great ingenuity for its economy to survive with so little trade, but the alternative would be to surrender and give up its sovereignty. And so they figure out ways to endure.
The character and the severity of this nearly seventy year campaign of threats and aggression against the people of Korea has been one of the most unknown aspects of U.S. policy. It speaks to the importance of revealing the truth about history and what is happening today.
But in recent years the truth has started to surface because the Korean people’s movement including victims of those massacres at the beginning of the war, have worked tirelessly to make it happen. Mingjok Tongshin is an important component of that movement to bring out the terrible truth about what Washington DC has done to the Korean people. That shows that Washington can’t break the determination of the Korean people in the north or the south. From the Cheju uprising in 1948, to the Kwangju Rebellion in 1980, to the Cheju protests against the naval base construction of today, and the refusal of the leadership of North Korea to be dictated to by Washington, Korean people have shown what the fight for self-determination is all about.
Ken Roh has built Minjok Tongshin as an expression of that powerful enduring spirit of the Korean people’s movement. We in the International Action Center look to Minjok Tongshin not only as a source of information that’s blocked out by the corporate controlled media, but also as a friend and ally in the people’s movement. Once again, congratulations on fifteen years of unintimidated people’s journalism!
U.S. troops and weapons out of Korea. Korea is one!

International Action Center:

60 years ago, at the end of the war of U.S. aggression nearly every building in north Korea had been destroyed in the war. U.S. planes had dropped 420,000 bombs on Pyongyang alone. The population of the city then was 400,000 people. So, that's more than 1 bomb for every woman, child and man. People were forced to live in  caves, hovels and in bombed out shells.

35 years later, Deirdre Griswold, the editor of Workers World Newspaper visited the DPRK in 1988 and her first observation was “for as far as I could see along the broad boulevard of Kwangbok Street, new apartment buildings were going up.”

And, like that spirit of eternal optimism that continues to build until every homeless person in the DPRK was housed, Minjok-Tongshin refuses to yield in its commitment to getting out the vital truth about what is really happening on the Korean Penninsula, including the north of Korea, no matter who doesn't like it. And, it won't be stopped from attacks from ignorant cyber activists who unknowingly do the work of the CIA targeting Minjok. Neither will it yield to the lies and villifications of the DPRK that are meant to silence voices of truth out of fear of reprisal.

Minjok stands strong – and it's what's needed, especially now when so many in positions of influence are so willing to cower and remain silent or even be complicit with U.S. imperialist military and economic wars both foreign and domestic against working and poor people. Minjok and its staff remain vigilant and courageous in the face of the powers that be and so must we – this award is an honor and a renewal of our pledge to fight for what is true to the goals of building a just society.

Long live Minjok-Tongshin, and as a member organization of the Internation League of Peoples Struggles, we also say: long live international solidarity. Let's keep building!
