South Korea has announced plans to hold joint military drills with the United States in the East Sea this month.
A high-level official in the South Korean Defense Ministry told reporters that the drills will be held after the South Korea-U.S. diplomatic and defense ministerial talks on July 21st in Seoul.

The decision to hold the drills only in the East Sea and not in the Yellow Sea was made due to the fact that joint exercises with a U.S. aircraft carrier were conducted relatively recently in the Yellow Sea in October 2009.
The official added that the schedule for the exercises will be fixed during the ministerial talks in Seoul. He said that he expects the show of force to be quite formidable and that the exercises will cover a wide variety of scenarios.
