(Kyodo) _ Japan told South Korea on Friday it has found the remains of 801 more people forcibly brought to Japan from the Korean Peninsula between 1910 and 1945, bringing the total remains found to 1,669, Japanese Foreign Ministry officials said.
The Korean Peninsula was a colony of Japan during the period.

During subcabinet-level meetings with South Korea in Tokyo, Japanese officials explained Japan has been receiving information on the remains from local authorities and religious institutions since last September.

The remains are to be sent to South Korea.

The two countries plan to soon launch joint field research to discern the identities of the people whose remains were found, as was agreed in May.

On the remains of 704 other people kept in Yuten Temple in Tokyo"s Meguro Ward, the two countries agreed to work hard to find their families so Japan can return them at an early time, the officials said.
