The sanctuary in Mt. Kuwol in South Hwanghae Province of the DPRK was registered as an international sanctuary according to the decision of the 18th meeting of the International Coordinating Council for Man and Biosphere Programme of the UNESCO held in Paris on October 29. This was the second decision made by the UNESCO. The special sanctuary in the Revolutionary Battle Sites in Mt. Paektu, the most famous mountain in Korea, was registered as an international sanctuary in Juche 78 (1989).
The latest decision of the UNESCO made it possible to conduct the work to protect the bio-diversity including the ecosystem and species of animals and plants in this area under the international care.
The sanctuary in Mt. Kuwol includes Mt. Kuwol, one of the six famous mountains in Korea, an agricultural area and a seasonal bird sanctuary in Unryul close to the mountain.
The sanctuary in Mt. Kuwol is widely known for its spectacular scenery, rich flora and fauna and fantastic landscape.
There are in the mountain many historical and cultural relics listed as national treasures as they reflect the resourcefulness and talents of the ancestors.
The sanctuary has turned more attractive in the era of Songun.
The area of Mt. Kuwol with peculiar ecological environment has been built into a good ground for cultural recreation of the people, a site for mountaineering and a centre for scientific study according to the far-reaching plan of leader Kim Jong Il to build well the beauty spots of the country including its mountains, rivers and waterfalls and hand them to posterity.
