Dear Editor, NYT;

Re: "A North Korean Corleone" by Sheena Chestnut Greitens   (Sunday Review Section, Page 4, March 4, 2012)

This lengthy article on North Korea and  it"s new leader, written by an unknown graduate student majoring in government, who had obviously never even been to the country of North Korea  has been stirring an uproar in Korean American community, especially among those who has expertise on the country personally, professionally, on humanitarian grounds and especially having commitment on the principle of peaceful reunification of the peninsula.   Many even feel that the article has a strong, calculated malicious intent to bestow cooling effect on the recent improving trend in the relationship between U.S. and North Korea.

There had been such allegations on and off in the past, in "80th and "90th accusing DPRK(North Korea) carried out  mostly by Neocon politicians and conservative U.S. media people but none ever substantiated or supported by any clear evidence by U.S. government agencies such as CIA or FBI; especially the Super Bill issue, for which the government printing agency in U.S. as well as some European countries announced in public that North Korea had not produced such counterfeit currencies! Other absurdities and lack of relevance abound in the article, such as linking the government of North Korea to underground Mafia of Japan, China, Russia and even Irish Republican Army; linking the photo of North Korean leader riding a supermarket escalator to as being an illicit activity(?); cyberhacking activities generating $6 million in two years, a pittance for a country, etc., etc.

The country had gone through a severe economic hardship after the collapse of Soviet blocks and some early time of this national hardship, their diplomatic agencies in foreign location had to survive with little support from Pyongyang for a few years, and there had been some incidences whereby a few of them had misused their diplomatic privilege to engage in movement of some rare items such as rhino horns, ivory, shark fins, etc.,  but these were a very limited incidences and the perpetrators had been punished severely by their government. By imagining, creating, exaggerating, and adding malicious conjectures not based on any clear supportive data, the author of this terribly written article degrades the country of Democratic People"s Republic of Korea (DPRK), its new young leader and most of all its 24 million people or no, the entire Korean race of near 70 million people to a degree unprecedentedly horrific.

Lastly, it is beyond the scope of imagination of all Korean Americans that a nation"s most prestigious news media, the New York Times would allow and carry such unworthy writing.
