Many believe that N.Korea is referring to a live-fire exercise in response

The North Korean military announced Tuesday that it would respond to maritime firing drills planned by South Korea near Baengnyeong Island and other islands in the West Sea with “strong physical retaliation.”

The North Korean military sent a notice in the name of the North Korean commander responsible for the western section of the DMZ. The military stated that the planned South Korea live fire exercise being conducted near Baengnyeong Island, Daecheong Island and Yeonpyeong Island, with the mobilization of ground, sea and submarine forces mobilized by “puppet military warmongers,” was not a training exercise, but an open military invasion of North Korea’s territorial waters.

The notice also said that regarding its predicted self-defense strikes, all civilian ships, including fishing boats, should stay away from the waters designated a live-fire zone by the “gang of traitors.”

South Korea plans to carry out anti-submarine drills in the West Sea Aug. 5-9 with the participation of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine units as one of the retaliatory measures for the sinking of the Cheonan. The exercise will include live fire from naval guns, submarines and K-9 artillery near Baenyeong Island and Yeonpyeong Island.

North Korea carried out a live-fire artillery exercise in a pre-designated area of the West Sea in late January, firing rounds into the waters north of the Northern Limit Line (NLL). This time around, there are predictions it could conduct artillery training in response to the South Korean drill. Also being raised is the possibility that North Korea might test fire from a base on the West Sea a KN-02 surface-to-surface missile with a 120km range, or a Silkworm anti-ship missile with a 95km range.

Since North Korea has issued formal warnings of responses during past South Korea-U.S. or South Korean drills, some believe that these statements may be just talk. However, the dominant belief is that North Korea’s direct reference to a “physical retaliation” means that the possibility is high that it will respond with a live-fire exercise.

Meanwhile, China’s semi-official China News Service reported on the additional sanctions to be placed on North Korea as revealed Sunday by Robert Einhorn, U.S. State Department special advisor for nonproliferation and arms control. The news service said some analysts have voiced concerns that if the United States attempts to target North Korean economic groups in the manner it employed against Macao’s BDA bank, North Korea would respond aggressively with a third nuclear test. It added that North Korea, protesting South Korean and U.S. sanctions, has several times used the term “on the verge of war” to describe the current situation.
